On of the ironies of “Artificial Intelligence” is that it has to sift through all the same information we do. How much more intelligent can it be if it can’t tell fake news from real news? AI doesn’t yet have any real way to determine the “principle of authority”. Google has spent it’s entire existence trying to break the code on that one. The fact is history is written by the victors and “truth” is a moving target.
This morning I had an add in my inbox on two different platforms and my personal email. The ad said “use AI to manage your social media, create content and attract followers”. That got me thinking about how Google started out with it’s early “page rank” algorithm that turned into Penguin, Panda, Hummingbird and RankBrain. Today is is a hybrid of all of those forumulas. But at the end of the day is it any better? Can SEO experts still manipulate it?
Most of the “best of” websites are owned by one of the brands listed in the top 5 list. Does it make it true? NO. But does it geve credit to the brand and possibly increase it’s ranking or lower its ad cost? Yes. So imagine a world where AI helps build more fake news than real news. Should we change the name to “Artificial Disintelligence”? Maybe that is really what Sam Altman’s people really fear?
The real challenge of AI is finding the “truth” in the giant haystack of AI generated half truth content isn’t it?
